Former Norwich City Manager David Wagner Emerges as Contender for Blackburn Rovers Job, but Not the Favorite

Blackburn Rovers have been searching for a new manager since John Eustace decided to leave and take over at struggling Derby County.

Eustace was swayed by the project at Pride Park and was not on the same page as the decision-makers at Ewood Park.

Blackburn are now expediting the process to find a new manager, with the appointment potentially happening within the next 48 hours.

According to journalist Alan Nixon, former Norwich City boss David Wagner is in the mix for the Blackburn job, along with ex-West Brom manager Valerien Ismael, who appears to be the frontrunner.

David Wagner’s Experience and Record

Wagner was in charge of Norwich last season and guided the Canaries into the playoffs.

The 53-year-old German has yet to return to management, but he has previous experience in the Championship, having managed Huddersfield Town.

During his time at Norwich, Wagner oversaw 75 matches, achieving a win percentage of just over 41 percent.

At Huddersfield, Wagner managed over 150 matches, even leading the Terriers to promotion to the Premier League in 2017.

Valerien Ismael: A Questionable Choice?

Valerien Ismael, the former West Brom boss, is reported to be the favorite for the Blackburn job.

However, Ismael’s recent track record has been somewhat inconsistent, with the Frenchman losing his job at Watford in March and having been in and out of jobs in recent years, which may make him a less inspiring choice.

INSIDE FUTBOL SAYS:

  • David Wagner is an experienced Championship manager with a proven track record, having guided Huddersfield Town to promotion to the Premier League.
  • Although he was unable to secure promotion with Norwich City, the Canaries may not even finish in the playoffs this season under his successor Johannes Hoff Thorup.
  • Valerien Ismael’s recent job history, with frequent changes and an uninspiring spell at Watford, makes him a less appealing choice for the Blackburn position.
  • Wagner appears to be a solid candidate who could help Blackburn maintain their playoff position and potentially push for promotion.
